Preventing Blood Stream Infections

Preventing Blood Stream Infections

Helen DeVos Children's Hospital has implemented a number of safety steps to prevent catheter-associated blood stream infections (CABSI). We continue to monitor units, identifying best practices and sharing those practices throughout the organization.

Hospitalwide Safety Steps

To meet our goal of zero CABSIs, we formed a hospitalwide infection prevention team that meets monthly. The team:

Individual Unit Safety Steps

In our pediatric critical care unit (PCCU), neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), hematology/oncology and medical/surgical units, we have added precautions called "bundles." Bundles are a series of actions that can reduce infection risks at the time of catheterization and during ongoing daily maintenance. Our bundle steps include:

  • Daily assessments of catheter removal options
  • Adherence to hand washing hygiene steps
  • Standardized disinfection of catheter sites during dressing changes
  • Use of prepackaged dressing kits to promote proper techniques
  • Reinforcement that every measure must be met every time, every day
