I am the director of Community Relations at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. In my rounds at the hospital and in my travels around the state I meet patients, families, physicians, and members of the community who share stories with me and give me reasons to smile every day. My 23 years working in children’s hospitals give me a deep appreciation for the miracles and moments that happen here. I look forward to sharing these stories and connecting with you.

An Update on "Blake's Poke Prizes"
by
Since December when I first told you about “Blake’s Poke Prizes” 8-year-old Blake Hulliberger has done more than feed the craving of his fellow cancer patients for sweet and salty snacks.  His generosity has helped deliver the message that there is more than one way to fight childhood cancer. With the help of his parents, Joe and Kristeen Hulliberger of Greenville, in November “Blake’s Poke Prizes” was awarded $10,000 from the “Pepsi Refresh Challenge.” The Hulliberger’s use the winnings to shop for sweet and salty treats and healthy snacks to satisfy the “chemo taste buds” of kids like Blake who are battling cancer with daily rounds of chemotherapy. Nearly three months later Blake’s parents posted an update on the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital Facebook Page: “The true impact has been on the smiles of the kids’ faces as we bring a load of goods into the hospital. It looks like a train of fun and yummy things to eat. The pride on Blake’s face as he pushes a cart to the floor is priceless…Parents and kids are always thankful and love to see what we were able to find for them.” “The Pepsi Refresh Project has opened the eyes of so many people. It has shown people ways to help kids fighting cancer and opened so many hearts. With this money we have shown people that event through cancer you can stand up and make a difference…Pepsi has helped us make this world a better place through our idea and we are looking forward to the next $5,000 to continue our mission.”
