Bob Connors, MD, President, Helen DeVos Children's Hospital, Named to Becker Hospital Reviews “50 Experts Leading the Field of Patient Safety”

Becker's Hospital Review has named "50 Experts Leading the Field of Patient Safety," which includes individuals at national organizations, universities and healthcare organizations working to improve patient safety. The patient safety leaders listed consist of advocates, professors, researchers, administrators and healthcare providers who have won awards, published articles, spoken out and led initiatives to reduce harm and ensure safety. 

Magnet Recognition® Renewal 

Spectrum Health Blodgett and Butterworth hospitals and Helen DeVos Children's Hospital earned Magnet Recognition status by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Magnet Recognition is considered to be one of the highest honors bestowed upon a health care organization. Only 5 percent of hospitals in the country receive this prestigious designation. It recognizes health care organizations that provide the very best in nursing care and promote professionalism in nursing practice.

U.S. News & World Report's 2012–13 Best Children's Hospitals

Helen DeVos Children's Hospital (HDVCH) was recently named one of U.S. News & World Report's 2012–13 Best Children's Hospitals in six specialties:

  • Cancer
  • Diabetes & Endocrinology
  • Nephrology
  • Orthopedics
  • Pulmonology
  • Urology

U.S. News & World Report lists the top 50 hospitals in 10 pediatric specialties, including cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology, neonatology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and urology. In all, 80 hospitals across the country ranked in one or more specialties.

2012 Impact Award in Public Relations & Communications

Helen DeVos Children's Hospital was selected as the recipient of 2012 Impact Award in Public Relations & Communications by the Children's Hospital Association, formerly the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions. The award recognizes excellence in public relations and communications for children's hospitals and child health programs. The public relations campaign shared "24 Ways Kids Are Different" and highlighted how their health care needs are different. The ways kids are different was the centerpiece of an integrated blend of traditional and social media, proactive news media, media partnerships, physician communications and special events.

Engineering News-Record Best of the Best Award

Helen DeVos Children's Hospital was recognized by Engineering News-Record with its 2011 Best of the Best Project Award in the health care category. The hospital was selected from more than 700 entries for being an outstanding achievement in construction within the U.S. for 2011. Independent industry judges chose winners in 18 categories based on design and construction excellence, teamwork, safety and contribution to the community. The children's hospital was selected for its sustainable design, which maximizes daylight and reduces energy consumption, and, most importantly, its healing environment.

American College of Physician Executives' Leape Ahead Award

Helen DeVos Children's Hospital was presented with the first LeapeAhead Award from the American College of Physician Executives. The award recognizes medical schools and teaching hospitals that promote a culture of leadership, professionalism, communication and teamwork. It was established to acknowledge organizations that develop innovative projects that lead to safer, higher quality health care. Helen DeVos Children's Hospital was recognized for its safety-behavior training for all employees and physicians, consistent coding and classification of serious safety events, new safety metrics, transparency of data and safety events, and safety behavior residency curriculum.

2011

Modern Healthcare's 2011 Patient Safety Spirit Award

In late 2011, Helen DeVos Children's Hospital was recognized as part of Modern Healthcare's 19th annual Spirit of Excellence awards. The Spirit of Excellence awards acknowledge programs that support organizational excellence, patient and employee satisfaction, customer service, commitment and community participation. Helen DeVos Children's Hospital received the Patient Safety Spirit Award, which focuses on strategies and processes that improve the safety of care for patients. The children's hospital was recognized for developing safety behavior training and a safety leadership infrastructure, encouraging transparency of safety events and measuring performance against strict quality and safety metrics.

National Patient Safety Foundation's 2011 Chairman's Medal

The National Patient Safety Foundation awarded the 2011 Chairman's Medal to Bob Connors, MD, president, Helen DeVos Children's Hospital, and practicing pediatric surgeon. The award was presented at the Patient Safety Congress in Washington, D.C., and recognizes emerging leadership in the patient safety field. Recipients must demonstrate an ability to inspire and lead the change necessary to implement patient safety improvements. Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals®: National Benchmarks

Spectrum Health Hospital Group - Grand Rapids and Spectrum Health United Hospital in Greenvillewere named among the Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals: National Benchmarks. The Spectrum Health Hospital Group - Grand Rapids recognition includes Butterworth Hospital, BlodgettHospital and Helen DeVos Children's Hospital. They were the only hospitals in Grand Rapids to earn this honor. Read the news release.

Level I Pediatric Trauma Center

Helen DeVos Children's Hospital has been verified as a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons. This achievement recognizes the hospital's dedication to providing optimal care for injured infants, children and adolescents by physicians, nurses, child life specialists and rehabilitation specialists. The verification program promotes the development of trauma centers that provide the necessary hospital resources to care for injured patients and a range of services to address their needs. Spectrum Health Grand Rapids was the 2010 Elite Winner for Diversity and Multiculturalism, awarded by West Michigan's "101 Best and Brightest Companies to Work For." (Spectrum Health Grand Rapids also received the award in 2009.) We were recognized for displaying an open and inclusive attitude toward people of differing human qualities, promoting a tolerant work environment, and considering diversity and multiculturalism a competitive advantage.

American Society of Clinical Oncology Trials Award

The hematology, oncology and bone marrow transplant program at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital received the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Trials Award for the program's work to improve cancer care through clinical research. We were one of just eight hospitals in the country to receive this recognition. The award acknowledges the large number of patients enrolled in our clinical trials-roughly ten times the national average. Read the news release.
