Why Refer to Pediatric Radiology?

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, a pediatric radiologist is specially trained to understand the unique needs of children, parents and pediatricians in the diagnostic process.

Pediatric radiologists are experts in selecting the best imaging techniques to diagnose medical and surgical problems, ensuring that the test is performed properly and safely and interpreting the test results to make an appropriate diagnosis.

A Multispecialty Approach

Our pediatric radiology team features four full-time board-certified pediatric radiologists. Expert team members include radiology physician assistants and radiology technologists, child life specialists and nurses all dedicated to pediatric care.We also work closely with other pediatric subspecialties and departments at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital, including anesthesiology, the emergency department and the pediatric sedation team to provide coordinated, comprehensive and kid-friendly care.

One of our primary concerns is minimizing any discomfort before, during or after an exam. Trained child life specialists work with children and families on coping strategies, relaxation techniques, comfort measures and pro-active education. We also offer a playroom, a super-kid-friendly exam room and video goggles that allow kids to watch a movie or listen to music during their MRI. For invasive or lengthy procedures, our pediatric sedation team can briefly sedate a child so that the exam can be performed safely.
