Family and Fun Spaces
Sometimes a little sunshine or shade is "just what the doctor ordered." Accessible from the Floor 1 lobby, this beautiful green space offers some fresh air whenever weather permits. We've included play spaces with hopscotch and musical enchantment with chimes, bongo drums and a xylophone. Or enjoy quiet spaces with a labyrinth and even electrical outlets so patients using infusion pumps can enjoy the garden, too.
We believe in the power of smiles. This playful space features special shows and opportunities for interactive play.
Peter C. and Pat Cook Library
Available to all patient families, this leisure library and business center offers a variety of opportunities. Computer stations allow visitors to check e-mail, update CarePages or connect to helendevoschildrens.org. The Peter C. and Pat Cook Library also features access to business and communication services such as fax, notary public and special telephone equipment (such as dual handsets for interpretation). Call 616.267.0100 for open hours.
Special First Floor Features:
- Moving water, filled with bubbles, makes the bubble wall come alive.
- On the liquid floor, colors change as you step.
- You'll see amazing art everywhere, created by area children teamed up with local and regional artists and coordinated by LaFontsee Galleries of Grand Rapids.
- Silly circles, at every information desk, are child-height cut-outs of textured acrylic that little ones love to touch and feel.
- At the Playmotion wall, children approach the interactive wall and see themselves and their motions projected in abstract form. Interactive games and other applications can be selected by the user.
Floor 11 is our official "family floor," dedicated to family rest, convenience and rejuvenation. We've done our best to create a home away from home, where you can bring your family and guests for a break in the family room, fix a family snack, spend time reflecting in the chapel or even do a load of laundry.
Floor 11 Hours: 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
(After-hours access may be available. Ask your child's nurse.)
A favorite feature of Floor 11! Here, you can reconnect and feel like yourselves for a little while. An important part of healing is taking time to relax as spouses, parents, siblings and friends. We encourage you to enjoy your time together in this comfortable gathering space.
The family kitchen is at your service, with sinks, two microwaves, refrigerator, dishwasher and vending machines for quick meals and snacks while you stay close to your child.
Floor 11 features a laundry room with two washers and two dryers for inpatient family use. There is no cost to use the machines. However, a family member must be present until washing and drying cycles are complete. Items must be removed when your laundry is finished. Laundry supplies can be brought from home or purchased from a vending machine in the laundry room.
Floor 11 is home to a special place for prayer, spiritual focus and respite for people of all faiths. The circular chapel offers a welcoming space for patients, families and visitors. Most of the seating is flexible to promote the use of the space by individuals, pairs or small groups. Through the use of natural imagery, the artwork and furnishings invite reflection and promote a sense of connectedness and hope. The large skylight encourages an uplift of the human spirit.
Activity Room/ELF Theater
This space is for patients to come and play. Healthy siblings are also welcome with parent supervision. The child life team will facilitate structured play groups as well as open play times. Helen DeVos Children's Hospital is fortunate to have generous community involvement in helping to provide a variety of community visitors and activities year-round. This is also the premier spot for movie nights, complete with a large screen, comfortable seating and surround sound. Ask your child's nurse or child life specialist for the latest details.
