Ophthalmology services at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital provide care for infants, children and adolescents with vision problems and diseases of the eye. Our comprehensive approach includes diagnosis, treatment and surgical interventions for everything from eye infections to visual processing disorders. In addition, the team provides ongoing management of care in children who have chronic diseases such as diabetes that may affect the eyes.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, a pediatric ophthalmologist is specially trained to provide medical and surgical treatment for vision problems and diseases of the eye in infants, children and adolescents.

This can include:

  • Care for eye injuries
  • Diagnosing problems of the eye caused by diseases of the body such as juvenile diabetes or juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and other medical and neurological diseases
  • Diagnosing visual processing disorders
  • Prescribing glasses and contact lenses
  • Surgery, microsurgery and laser surgery for problems such as weak eye muscles, crossed eyes, wandering eyes, blocked tear ducts, retinal problems and infections
  • Ovarian and testicular dysfunction
  • Pituitary gland hypo/hyperfunction
