Giving

Through the Wish Gift Program, the Helen DeVos Children's Hospital Foundation provide donors the opportunity to purchase identified tangible items needed by departments and programs at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital. These items bring joy, support and comfort to our patients while meeting the donor's wishes to make a difference and to touch the lives of thousands of patients and families each year.

Child Life Professional Opportunities (Practicum and Internship Programs):

Our Child Life program is pleased to offer both child life practicum and child life internship opportunities. We strive to offer students a wide variety of experiences within the hospital setting as well as a solid understanding of the child life profession. We accept students with or without a university affiliation.

Student Internship Program

Our 16-week internship is offered in winter, summer and fall semesters. The internship is composed of four 3-week rotations plus an additional rotation of the students’ choosing. Students will gain experience and knowledge in multiple areas of the hospital setting, including but not limited to the following: inpatient pediatrics, pediatric intensive care unit, hematology/oncology unit, neonatal unit, emergency department, radiology, outpatient surgery, and outpatient clinics. Students will complete reading and written assignments, attend in-services, and receive hands-on instruction and experience in order to prepare them for a career in child life. The internship is a full-time experience (40 hours a week) and requires that students have completed a child life practicum at a different hospital prior to applying for the internship. Please see the internship application for further requirements.

It includes observational opportunities in at least four areas of the hospital, where students observe child life specialists at work. The practicum also includes time spent in the playroom setting, interacting with patients and families, and assisting the child life staff with various tasks. Students completing a child life practicum at HDVCH are not eligible to apply for an internship at HDVCH. Students are also required to have at least 50 hours of volunteer experience in order to apply for the practicum. Please see the practicum application for further requirements.
