A spacious and welcoming two-story lobby introduces children and families to the healing environment of the children's hospital. The design and amenities are intended to make children feel comfortable and safe.
This floor features access to and from the Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital lobby, and a bridge from the the 35 Michigan ambulatory care center which will open in the Summer of 2011.
This floor includes:
gift shop
safety store
restaurant
outdoor children's garden
interactive play area
family library and media center
classroom space
Art All of the art in the building is made by children with the help of local and regional artists. The project includes over 1,000 pieces throughout the hospital. LaFontsee Galleries of Grand Rapids coordinated the art project. Bubble Wall A "bubble" wall features a soothing look at enclosed, moving water that creates bubbles.
Interactive Play Area Children see their image abstractly projected on an interactive screen which functions like a video game console but without controllers. For example, children can watch falling snow and make a "virtual snowball" by bending down to "scoop up a handful of snow" and "throw" it against the screen to watch it splatter. Another interactive feature: liquid underneath the floor that changes color when stepped upon.
Library and Classroom The library has computers, print resources and a media room and can function as a "business center" for parents to stay in touch with work and family while their child is in the hospital. The classroom can also be used for community education and special events.
Outdoor Garden Accessible from the lobby, the outdoor garden features plantings, play areas (hopscotch and chimes), quiet spaces (including a labyrinth) and electrical outlets so that patients with infusion pumps can stay connected outdoors.
Performance Stage This area is designed for scheduled entertainment or impromptu play and make-believe.
